Get Ready…Get Set…Non-GMO Month Starts Now!

September 26th, 2011

On Saturday Sept. 10th, 2011 we kicked off Non-GMO month early by holding our first Right to Know – Ohio event with nationally renowned keynote speakers Jeffrey M. Smith & Robyn OʼBrien on the topic of GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

The event was a success with approximately 300 people in attendance and many of those representing major groups like the Weston A Price Foundation, the OCA (Organic Consumerʼs Association), Millions Against Monsanto, Eden Foods, Organic Valley, the Non-GMO Project, Small Farm Institute and many, many more.

When we set out on this adventure, we knew it would be an uphill battle. This is a subject that is not often talked about, and most certainly not understood by a huge majority of people in Ohio. There are lots of people that just plain donʼt even want to know. They are already facing enough of a battle on a daily basis for survival. Then there are the farmers whose families have been feeding us for generations. How do we bring this message to the people without hurting them? There were so many dynamics involved in setting up this event that I was completely unprepared to face. There was even a point where I said I canʼt do this. The thought of hurting one person was terrifying to me. But then I realized how many people have already unknowingly been affected by these foods and I knew that the message must be shared. So I moved forward “afraid.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chili Recipe For The Fall and Winter Months

September 23rd, 2011

Autumn has come to Ohio, and it is an absolutely beautiful time of year. I love summer and always hate to see it go, but Ahhhh….Autumn is unsurpassed and I relish every day… soaking up the last rays of sunny warmth during the days yet enjoying the crisp coolness of the nights. As quickly as summer seems to disappear, the exquisite days of autumn hurriedly speed by even more quickly. It’s an ever changing time of year, filled with picturesque flowers, beautiful changing leaves, anticipation of the holidays to come and of the first snowfall and lots of great comfort food.

It’s a perfect time of year to make a big pot of chili and this recipe is my favorite. Pair it with a piece of Berlin Natural Bakery’s moist and succulent Amish Country Spelt Cornbread, top it with wedges of delicious Swiss Cheese, and you have all the fixing’s for one scrumptious and effortless meal.

chili recipe

1 lb ground beef
1 small onion chopped
1 can chili beans (my favorite is Brooks Hot & Spicy, but any brand will do)
1 large can or bottle of tomato juice (48 oz)
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp salt (more or less based on taste)

Brown ground beef and chopped onion in a large saucepan. Add chili beans, tomato juice, sugar and salt. Stir well and allow to simmer for an hour or two. That’s all there is to it. It tastes so good this way, but you could definitely add other ingredients, such as sausage, peppers, chopped garlic, hot sauce, chili peppers, whatever you might think would give it an even better flavor. Add pieces of cut up cheese to your bowl of chili, serve with buttered cornbread and enjoy.

May you enjoy each day of this beautiful time of year as well, no matter where you may be. Until next time….Happy Baking!

Friends In Focus: Dover Healthy Alternatives

September 22nd, 2011

By Marsha Bonecutter

As many of us know, living through a painful experience can often make us a changed person. At age 34, Connie Ciekanski, owner of Dover Healthy Alternatives in Dover, Ohio, found her life altered forever, when she attempted to help a friend who was dying of cancer. “She was diagnosed with cancer at age 38,” explained Connie. “She went through several months of treatments. She had a five year old son. She was slowly losing her life. I felt so bad for her situation, so I went and listened to an herbalist speak, hoping to find something to help her. Sadly, it was too late and I wasn’t able to.”

Listening to the herbalist and the passing of her friend acted as a catalyst that ultimately led Connie to change her own health for the better. “I started by doing herbal cleansing,” said Connie. “I joined a multi-level company, bought a MRM (muscle response monitor), went to Michigan for training and certification and completely loved every minute of what I was doing.”

In September of 2000, Connie went into a health food store in downtown Dover and asked the owner if he wanted to sell his store—he said yes! “I really wasn’t thinking he would say yes,” laughed Connie, “I was so excited about owning my own store that I never feared failure. Our anniversary is September 1st.”

It has been an eventful 11 years for Dover Healthy Alternatives and for Connie and her family. The first location on Third Street in downtown Dover was a 1,000 square foot store which only accommodated the booming business for 6 months. Connie moved across the street to a location that was double the size and had a basement for meetings. The store flourished there for two years. Fortune smiled again when the former Goshen Dairy store at 320 North Wooster Avenue, Dover, became available. “My husband, Bob, took off work and we went to look at this building,” Connie recalled. “The whole time I told myself I was just curious to see it—there was no way I could move there. As soon as I saw the inside, I knew it had to be the next Dover Healthy Alternatives location.” Read the rest of this entry »
