Welcome to 2021, family! I hope you were able to celebrate the holidays safely and warmly and that you entered 2021 with eyes full of hope for a year of goodness and gratitude. That’s at least what we’re trying for! 

I know that for many of us, the new year means changes and taking inventory of our lives and habits and trying for better. 

I am happy to report that we’re not changing all that much. We’re still baking your daily bread in small batches in our little corner of the world - Berlin, Ohio. We’re still using minimal, high quality ingredients and we’re still committed to showing up for you and your families by providing you with bread and baked goods that you can feel good about!

All that’s staying the same, but here’s what’s changing! 

Soon, you will see some updated packaging from us.

Nothing major - colors are the same but we made some small changes to help people who “aren’t in the club” YET more easily recognize the value of what we bring to the table! We put nutritional keys on the front of the bag - totally bragging on our stats, of course. 

Andddddd we have actually put my name (Nicole) on the back of the bread bag after “Blessings!” 

If you’ve been with us for decades, you would know that it’s been my Mom’s name (Joy) for some time now. We’re doing a small, symbolic passing of the guard and I just couldn’t be more honored to put my name on products that have been incredibly hard fought for! Plus, I am humbled by my Mom’s and everybody’s trust at the bakery who completely support this change. It absolutely is an honor and to be honest, I still can't believe it! 

One other big, long awaited upcoming change is an ingredient elimination on our Biblical Spelt bread. You shared your feelings and we took them to heart and we are officially eliminating the Sprouted Soybeans from both the Sprouted Biblical Spelt bread AND the Biblical breadsticks. We’re waiting for the packaging to come in but once it’s in we’ll be saying goodbye to soybeans! 

We are so excited to welcome 2021 with open arms and we hope to continue to maintain our reputation for excellence and purity. We bake for you and it's a privilege we don’t take for granted!

Hi all! Pleasure to meet you! I am Nicole, the 3rd generation of Berlin Natural Bakery, and I thought I’d take a quick minute to reintroduce myself! 🙋‍♀️ I’m not typically a “in front of the camera gal” but I thought I’d end 2020 a little braver than I started it. 😂🤦‍♀️

So as you may know I’ve been in the process of learning and growing with BNB ultimately to “take it over from my Mom” which sounds soooo insane! I don’t know about you but I love my Mom and I certainly can’t imagine doing this without her. 😂 But I’m an “adult” so I’ve been growing into it. 😬

Beginning early January you will start seeing my name on the back of the bread bags instead of my Mom, Joy’s. The ending “Blessings!” will of course still stay because that’s a given! 😘

We have some very exciting things happening in 2021 that we’ve literally been working towards all year so make sure you stay connected! 

We love you guys so much and are basically humbled daily by your tags, your comments, your stories and your love for our Spelt baked goods. 🙏 We are HONORED to bake for you and your loved ones and we don’t take it for granted.

As far as me: well I am a born and raised bread LOVER! 🍞 I am also an avid reader and hiker. I have a young beagle so being outdoors regularly is a must. 😳😂 I LOVE our team at the bakery. We work hard and have fun - a delightful combination! I’m also a singer - yay alto power! My Holiday season (in non pandemic years) is usually fully of caroling at hospitals, retirement homes, homeless shelters and more. I am missing it bad this year. 🥺

I’m sure there are thousands of other things about me that are FASCINATING but let’s start there. 😉 Always keep your audience wanting more or whatever. 😂😂😂😂

Dear Berlin Natural Bakery Family –

I just can’t even begin to find the words to express my gratitude and I truly believe it’s because I have so much to be grateful for that I don’t know where to start.

This has been an incredible year for me full of growing, humbling and learning.

I will forever be the first to admit that I don’t know everything. It’s why I find myself marveling at the quality of the company I am able to keep and learn from. 

The people at Berlin Natural Bakery and our partners are incredible, upstanding and honorable people. Very few people do what we do and the wonder of that has hit me harder this year than any other.

We literally bake bread in a world that’s been content to simply manufacture it. And let me tell you, when you bake A LOT of bread, it’s easy to find yourself thinking “there’s got to be an easier, cheaper and a faster way than how we’re doing this!” And you know what? There are a thousand answers out there to that frustration. A thousand pieces of machinery. A thousand ingredient additives. A thousand ways to cut corners, make life easier and ultimately compromise.

However, easier, quicker and cheaper hasn’t been serving us as people, as a community and as a country. In fact, it’s taken something so pure and life giving and real like your daily bread and ultimately made it unrecognizable.

Is it hard to do what we do? Bake real bread, I mean.  

Absolutely! Do our bakers, our slicers, our packers, our people work hard? Absolutely. Harder than you can probably imagine, especially when we get an avalanche of orders like we did on Cyber Monday.

Their dedication to excellence, their consistency and their commitment is absolutely inconceivable to me (especially in this day and age!) and when I see them, I can’t help but marvel in wonder at what all they accomplish in a day.

They have always risen to the challenge ahead of them and they do so with excellence. They inspire me.

Beyond the hard working people at Berlin Natural Bakery – we find another source of inspiration and it is a deep well from which to pull from. It’s you! It’s your stories, your testimonies, your emails, your comments and your recommendations!

It’s hearing how we impact families and the lives of children all across the country that keeps us striving to do better and work even harder in the face of a food industry that’s been too quick to compromise.

You are the heartbeat of Berlin Natural Bakery. Without you, we wouldn’t exist. And without your support we wouldn’t have been able to grow like we have.

Thank you to those of you scattered across the country, singing our praises and championing us in your circle.

Greetings Berliners!

The holiday season is always a special time of year for us.  Sharing our time laughing with our family and friends is always an amazing experience.  However, it is also the time of the year where we get to stop our world for a bit and reflect on the year as it draws to a close.

2014 has not been without challenges so let’s take a look at just a few of them.

1)  We faced an incredible amount of stress in the beginning of the year - dealing with unusually cold temperatures, mountains of snow and grain shipments stuck at shipping ports for what seemed to be forever.  None of us will ever forget the beginning of 2014.

2) We faced a harvest with gluten so fragile it took our bakers to a whole new category of miracle workers.  When you have products with only a couple of ingredients, there are very few ways to make up for fragile grain. However, our bakers do not know the words “it can’t be done” because failure is never an option to them.  They absolutely amaze me.

3)  The FDA was kind enough to stop by and insist that we change our ingredient labels once again.  Considering that I went to two stores and purchased 50 spelt products that do not meet the requirement demanded of us - makes one wonder as to why we are constantly being targeted.  Could it perhaps be because we are very visibly involved in the battle to label GMOs?  It certainly makes one wonder.

4)  For over twenty five years we’ve been spreading the word on the importance of the Non-GMO movement, the many benefits of ancient grains and the value of protecting heirloom seeds.  Finally, in 2014, there were books being written by famous doctors and people became very quickly educated through the “label GMO” ballots in 26 states around the country.  It appeared our day had finally come - and no doubt it has - but with it certainly came with a price tag.  Due to market demand the cost of our ingredients increased over 30% overnight.  

Yes, 2014 has been challenging- but it certainly has been worth all the extra effort.  Knowing the difference our products make in your lives is a reward unlike any other.  We don’t consider Berlin Natural Bakery simply a business - it is our calling. It is our contribution to creating products that stay true to our mission. 

Our mission is simply to ensure that people still have a choice.  A choice between mass produced modernized wheat baked goods or heirloom ancient grain baked goods made in small batches - from scratch - using methods that are unheard of in today’s “do everything faster” world.  When it comes to our food - we believe that faster is NOT better.  That not doing what we know is right - is never an option.

We are so grateful for each and every one of you.  We thank you for staying with us through the many challenges we faced this year.  And we thank you for knowing, without a doubt, that we always make decisions with the first thought as to how we can lessen the impact on you, our customers.  Without you - Berlin Natural Bakery would not exist.  You make the challenges we face worth overcoming.  We look forward to sharing another year with you and we wish you a wonderful and blessed 2015!
